Frequently Asked Questions

I have never had a flea problem before. Where are my pets picking up fleas?
Fleas are very hardy pests that are quite capable of hitching rides on a variety of mammals. Wild animals or feral pets traveling through the environment may be a source for a pet’s exposure.
Fleas may be brought to the house by:
  • You – attached to clothing, luggage, dog blankets, etc.
  • Your pet – any time your pet steps outside your house, they are potentially exposed to fleas, especially in areas where there are other animals.
  • Stray or homeless cats and dogs – since these animals are not being cared for, they are easy targets for fleas. A single feral cat walking through your back yard even just one time may drop many flea eggs into the grass or under shrubs.
  • Wildlife – particularly raccoons and opossums. These animals typically aren’t seen very often, because they are active at night. A single opossum can carry as many as 1,000 adult fleas! An opossum walking through your back yard even just one time can drop many flea eggs into the grass or under shrubs as they pass through.
  • Non-treated pets in the household – most dogs are treated for fleas and ticks. Often, the cats in the household are not, especially if they are indoor only cats.
  • Non-treated pets in the neighborhood – you may be vigilant about treating your pets for fleas, but your neighbor(s) may not.

What are the benefits of Advantage® II for cats?
Here are the benefits you can expect from Advantage® II for cats:
  • Kills through contact so fleas don't have to bite to die
  • Kills all flea life stages
  • Topical application
  • Kills reinfesting fleas within 2 hours, i.e., fleas jumping on the pet 12 hours after product administration
  • Waterproof — recommend use of a soap-free shampoo

How does Advantage® II work?
Advantage® II combines two active ingredients:
  • Imidacloprid attacks the flea's nervous system – paralyzing and ultimately killing it.
  • Pyriproxyfen is an insect growth regulator (IGR) that kills flea eggs and larvae.

This combination plays a crucial role in existing infestations, because:
In an existing infestation you might only be aware of the adult fleas, which only represent around 5% of the full infestation and are found on the pet.
Immature flea life stages (flea eggs, larvae and pupae) which live in the pet’s environment consist of around 95% of the infestation and can be almost invisible to the naked eye.

What is the difference between Advantage® II and oral flea products?
Advantage® II flea prevention is applied to your pet topically and kills fleas through contact with the product on your pet’s skin, so fleas don't have to bite to die. With oral flea medications, fleas have to bite the pet and be exposed to the medication in the pet before the fleas are killed.

How long does Advantage® II last?
A single application of Advantage® II stops biting fleas up to one month.
How often should I use Advantage® II?
Use monthly, year-round to help keep your pet protected from fleas.

My pet is strictly indoors. Should I still use Advantage® II?
Yes. Fleas can be brought into the home by you or other pets without even realizing it. Immature flea stages remain dormant until conditions are appropriate for development and infest pets after hatching. That’s why it is important to also treat indoor pets.

I only see fleas on one of my pets. Is it sufficient to just treat the infested pet?
No. All pets in the home should be treated, since the infested pet is likely to pass on fleas to other pets it is in contact with in the same environment.

At what age can I start using Advantage® II on my cat?
Advantage® II for cats is for use on cats and kittens 8 weeks of age and older.

How do I apply Advantage® II for cats?
Applying Advantage® II flea control to your feline friend is simple and convenient. Advantage® II is available in three different weight bands for cats and kittens 8 weeks and older that weigh at least 2 pounds.
